Blue Snowball Image:Blue snowball.jpg This is without a doubt the easiest mic in the ITP arsenal, and make recording pretty much any audio source a snap. All that's needed is the mic, a USB cable, and a computer. Plug it in, open your audio program of choice, select the mic as an input (no additional software installation needed!), and you're good to go.

The mic has only one control on it, which is a three-way selection switch on its back that lets you pick among its mic modes:

Position 1 — Cardioid pattern Position 2 — Cardioid pattern, -10db Position 3 — Omnidirectional pattern

This mic is equally at home as a voice-over input (there's one already set up in the sound booth) and for quick-and-dirty recordings on the floor.

Ceramic Capacitors Image:Caps ceramic.jpg Capacitors store electrical energy while there's energy coming in, and release it when the incoming energy stops. They have a variety of uses. One common use is to smooth out the dips and spikes in an electrical supply. This use is called decoupling.

Ceramic capacitors are cheap and unpolarized. They generally have very small capaacitance values. They're useful decoupling caps in a low-current circuit. You often see them used to decouple the power going into a microcontroller or other integrated circuit.

The number on a ceramic cap gives you its value and order of magnitude. For example, 104 indicates a 0.1 microfarad (uF) cap. 103 indicates a 0.001 microfarad cap.
Conductive Velcro Image:A207.jpg Also called Conductive Hook and Loop, this fastener is just like Velcro, only conductive. It is typically silver-coated, it's It can sewn or glued into place. This is an excellent material to use for soft switches.

Diodes Image:Diodes 400x.jpg Diodes permit voltage to flow in one direction and block it in the other direction. LEDs are a type of diode, as are the 1N4001 diodes shown here. They're useful for stopping voltage from going somewhere you don't want it to go.
Electrolytic Capacitors Image:Caps electrolytic.jpg Capacitors store electrical energy while there's energy coming in, and release it when the incoming energy stops. They have a variety of uses. One common use is to smooth out the dips and spikes in an electrical supply. This use is called decoupling.

Electrolytic capacitors can generally store more charge than ceramic caps, and are longer lasting and more expensive. They're usually polarized, meaning that they have a positive leg and a negative leg. This is because current flows more efficiently through them one way than the other.

An electrolytic cap will have a + or - on one side, as shown here.
